The Story Behind RAD1AL
In 2004, I recorded regularly at Milestone, a small jazz club in the Shuni Roman amphitheater. One evening, the owner called and told me to come immediately: a once-in-a-lifetime performance was about to happen.
The musicians had been friends since childhood and had learned to play music together. As adults, they had gone their separate ways, each becoming an A-list player with a career spanning North and South America. By chance, they found themselves back in their childhood town at the same time and decided to play together again for old times’ sake. One of them called the owner of Milestone and asked whether they could perform a set that evening. Naturally, he said yes—and that spontaneous reunion is how this recording came to exist.
Everything was prepared for an ambitious three-LP, two-CD release, but we decided not to issue it at the time.
Years later, when I began changing my label’s focus from CD to reel-to-reel, I contacted the bandleader and asked to release the recordings. He told me it was impossible. Two members had since signed major recording contracts and feared legal action from their labels.
After a year of trying to persuade him, I made one final attempt. I sent him the audio files and promised that if he still said no after hearing them again, I would leave the project alone. He called me an hour later, and we began putting the release together.
The other musicians still couldn't agree to appear under their own names, so I proposed a solution: we would create a new identity for the ensemble and never reveal who actually played on the recording. They agreed.
RAD1AL was born.
The music can finally be heard. The identities of the remarkably accomplished musicians behind it will remain a secret.
